Alcohol is a legal, controlled substance that has the ability to lower inhibitions and anxiety. The effects of alcohol are broad and include everything from anger to slurred speech to loss of coordination. Though alcohol is legal and some can drink without an addiction, those whose life is negatively affected by alcohol on a consistent basis is considered to be an alcoholic or have an alcohol use disorder. Alcoholics often have a need for alcohol in some form so much so that their ability to function without alcohol is extremely impaired.
